Deep Eddy Cabaret
Austin Historic Landmark Designation
Built as Deep Eddy Grocery around 1914, the building served the neighborhood for decades, becoming an integral part of the community through its sponsorship of local Pitch and Putt sports teams. In the 1950s, the building changed hands and was renamed Deep Eddy Cafe, which was eventually renamed Deep Eddy Cabaret in 1975.
When the Deep Eddy Grocery became the Deep Eddy Café in the 1950s, and later the Deep Eddy Cabaret, the business served as both a favorite local hangout and tourist destination. The enterprise has been written up in numerous local and statewide newspapers and magazines, including the Austin American Statesman, Austin Chronicle, Bon Appetit and in several books, including Bucket List Bars and Come Here Often? In 1981, then-manager Lynn Lively noted that the customers included “an eclectic mix of people – frat rats, carpenters, lawyers, state workers,” and was a longtime favorite haunt of long serving Texas politician Bob Bullock.
Today, the dive bar and its burger shop continue to charm the community and visitors alike, residing next to the iconic Deep Eddy Bathing Beach. As Bon Appétit crowned it "dive bar royalty" in 2019 and the Austin Chronicle affirmed its status as one of the city's oldest and most beloved bars in 2023, Deep Eddy Cabaret remains a must-visit when in Austin.
